Tableau tutorial

In the Tableau project tomorrow, you'll be creating visualisations of a dataset of your choice, and presenting your work to the rest of the class. In preparation for that project, first get to know Tableau Public better by following the steps below:
  1. Download Tableau Public from http://www.tableausoftware.com/public/download (you'll need to supply your email address for this) or get the installer directly from me and then install it on your machine.
  2. Start Tableau, press F1 for help, then select "Getting Started".
  3. Work through the three subheadings, concluding by doing the tutorial under "Learning to Use Tableau". The mentioned dataset (an excel spreadsheet) is not included in the installer, so download the zip file attached to this page and unpack it in your "My Documents\My Tableau Repository\Datasources" directory.
Important notes:
  • Yes, you will need to create a new account when you "Save to Web".
  • To be able to use the Region as a Quick Filter, you have to drop it on the "Level of Detail" shelf of the "Sales Map" sheet.
  • See my example for embedding your visualisation dashboard into a Google site like this one (you need a Code Wrapper gadget). To embed in most other blogs, go to HTML mode, and paste the Tableau embed code (which you can see by clicking on the "Share" button after saving to web).
